Jack Gilbert writes the best love poems ever in English. Almost "old-school" in their intensity (think John Donne), his poems will make you love too. Many of the poems in this collection were written to his lover (wife?) who died, and they're lovely, sad and inconsolable. ( )

An uncompromising book about living willfully. This is my favorite book by my favorite living poet. If I have not bought it for you yet, I will. ( )

My all-time favorite book of poetry. Gilbert is at his best in this amazing distillation of the tremulous bonds between lovers as one approaches the end of her life and then the aftermath. His poem, "Tear It Down" often reminds me about the necessity of intention in marriage. ( )

Lovely. This is one of my favorite books of poetry. It forces one to slow down, to appreciate simplicity in statement as a way of coping with the complexity of nature, to examine the relationship of repetition and obsession. I recommend it to everyone without reservation. ( )
