OF THE PENNSYLVANIA YEARLY MEETING OF PROGRESSIVE FRIENDS, HELD AT LONGWOOD, CHESTER COUNTY, 1874. "Serves best the Father he who most serves man, PHILADELPHIA: JOHN CRAIG & SON, BOOK AND JOB PRINTERS, South-East Corner of Sixth and Arch Streets. THE PENNSYLVANIA YEARLY MEETING OF PROGRESSIVE FRIENDS held its Twenty-Second Session in the meeting-house at Longwood, Chester County, commencing on the 11th of the Sixth month (June), 1874, at 10 o'clock, A. M. RACHEL ANNA LAMBORN, one of the Clerks, read the call, as follows: THE PROGRESSIVE FRIENDS OF PENNSYLVANIA will hold their Twentysecond Yearly Meeting, at Longwood (near Hamorton), Chester County, commencing on Fifth day (Thursday), the 11th of Sixth month (June), 1874, and continuing three days. The character and aims of this Association are now so well understood as hardly to need explanation. We meet to consider practical rather than speculative questions-questions of morals rather than questions of theology; but no subject that concerns the public welfare is excluded from our attention. Our aim is to inspire in one another a purpose to lead a pure and noble life, a life consecrated to humanity, to the deliverance of the human race from ignorance, superstition and sin, and to the promotion of peace, order and righteousness throughout the world. Especially would we do all in our power for the moral elevation of the people of our own country, to deliver them from the thraldom of party and sect, and to induce them to select for their rulers honest and highminded men, who will be a terror to evil-doers and a praise to them that do well. We would bear a testimony against intemperance, war, and every form of injustice and oppression, and if possible, persuade the human family to dwell together as one brotherhood, in peace, order, and love. All who have a heart for this work, whatever may be their religious opinions or affiliations, are cordially invited to meet with us. On motion of ISAAC MENDENHALL, CHARLES G. AMES was called temporarily to the Clerk's desk, as Chairman, and read a few remarks on the spirit and objects of the meeting, after which there was silence. SIMON BERNARD, ANNA Cox and ISAAC MENDENHALL were made a Committee to nominate officers and to settle with the Treas urer. CHANDLER DARLINGTON moved the appointment of a Business |
